Cottage blocks are becoming very popular here in Perth Western Australia for a number of reasons. One is the reasonable price. Another benefit these small blocks bring is the low maintenance. This means less time and money necessary to keep your house and gardens looking great.
With this in mind the owners set about making their house even more low maintenance by choosing a composite decking material from Decking Perth.
But before we get to that, let’s go back 12 months or so when the home was being designed. Summit Homes, who have a track record spanning over 30 years, installed concrete slabs both at the rear and front of the house as they were constructing this new dwelling. This means extra benefits to the householder in that the decking construction had a defined area and an extremely stable substructure.

Now concrete slabs can cause major issues for decking installers who are not used to them. Things such as; stagnant water (which kills decks in a very short period of time), uneven and unlevel slabs. But here at Decking Perth we are very familiar with installing decks of all types over many different types of substructures.
In particular with decking over concrete slabs we make sure we pack our joists up off the concrete. If this does not happen then there is potential for the joists to rot in a very short period of time. H3 CCA treated pine is not designed or warranted for ‘in ground’ use or sitting in water that would collect between the timber and the concrete. Decking Perth uses commercial grade packers to also level the deck. No slab is ever poured 100% level or straight. Even a few millimetres will be noticeable in the final decking boards and that is not acceptable to us or to our customers.
Another tip for novices is to fix the decking substructure to the concrete slab regularly. Failure to do so can result in buckling and lifting of the deck. In mild cases this can mean a bouncy and noisy deck. But in the severe examples the whole deck can lift and warp to such a degree that the entire deck needs replacing.
There is no danger of this if you (as these home owners have) trust Decking Perth to install your deck.

Now back to the choice of the decking material. The home owners had a huge choice of timber decking and all three levels of the composite decking from Decking Perth. They decided on FutureWood’s CleverDeck in Slate Grey because the initial price was quite close to timber decking but very much cheaper over the long run, the great dark grey colour, the eco-friendliness of using recycle materials and most of all the low maintenance that composite decking brings.
The composite decking result: Less time and money working and more time
enjoying their new house and relaxing alfresco.
